Septic Tanks, Treatment Plants
& Soakaways
A little bit about septic tanks....
The main principle to septic tanks is that they exist where main sewers don’t (i.e. more rural areas).
The chemicals in the tank break down the waste and separates it into 3 layers - the bottom layer is known as sludge (and we’ll leave it to your imagination what it consists of!), the middle layer is clean water and the top layer generally consists of grease and foam. As new waste enters the tank, the clean water is discharged into a soakaway (simply allowing the water to soak away into the ground)
As a general rule the tank should be emptied every 18 months - 2 years
